Man arrested in connection to 3 suspected drug overdose deaths in Monroe

Police arrest Monroe motel employee

MONROE, Mich. – Monroe County police investigated the deaths of three men in Monroe Tuesday, and suspect that all three resulted from drug overdoses.

Two of the deaths happened at the Willows Motel at 6939 South Telegraph Road in Bedford Township. The other was in Frenchtown Township, police say.

During an investigation, police found that an employee at the Willows Motel was selling drugs to its customers. The man, 53-year-old Rickey Lynn Bernard, was arrested. Bernard is a maintenance man at the motel and goes by the street nickname "Hillbilly."

Bernard was arrested on suspicion of selling and/or facilitating drugs, specifically heroin, in the hotel. He is also charged with tampering with evidence after he went through the pockets of one of the dead men, taking his money and using his cellphone, according to police.

Bernard is held at the Monroe County Jail on $250,000 cash bond.

Police say cocaine, heroin and fentanyl, a prescription pain killer, were found at the motel.
