Suspected Romulus kidnapper due in court Monday

Man accused of carjacking a woman and taking her child

ROMULUS, Mich. – The man accused of stealing a car with a 16-month-old in the backseat is expected to be in court as soon as Monday.

Romulus police responded to a call at the Howard Johnson hotel at 2:30 a.m. Saturday. The child's mother told police she was pulled from the vehicle as the suspect took off in an unknown direction.

Police say they received a call that a person matching the suspect's description was walking on Merriman Road in Westland. They found the suspect, who is about 22 years old, and took him into custody. He is being held at the Romulus Police Department.

Westland police found Ayden Casteels asleep in his mother's car at around 7:30 a.m. after recieving a tip from a Good Samaritan who saw the Amber Alert and went looking for the vehicle. The boy was examined and appears to be fine.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned on charges of carjacking and kidnapping Monday.
