Man shot while mowing lawn on Detroit's west side

DETROIT – Detroit police investigators are having a hard time with this one.

At about 10 a.m. Friday, Vee Easley was cutting the grass and getting the backyard ready for a weekend party at a home on Pontchartrain Street near 6 Mile Road. That's when another man fired one gunshot from the alley.

"An individual came up on the other side of the fence line and just fired shots," said Officer Nick Giaquinto. "The unusual part is they had a fence between them."

Sean Estes is Easley's cousin. He said the victim doesn't live at the home. He was just helping out his aunt with the yard work. That makes Estes think this wasn't a targeted attack.

"The weirdest thing is the fact that he's like rarely over here," said Estes.

Giaquinto said police don't want to speculate about a motive.

"At this point we do not know," he said.

Easley immediately drove himself to the Detroit Police Department's 12th Precinct after the shooting. He was having trouble breathing and officers rushed him to the hospital. He will survive his injury.

Meanwhile, police K9s were brought to the shooting scene to try to track down the gunman.

"I wish he had knocked on the door or something and let me know he was here," said Estes.
