WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A massive tree came barreling down on a home Monday in West Bloomfield Township during intense wind gusts that lasted for less than two minutes.

The 100-year-old maple tree destroyed a laundry room and garage, crushing the couple's new car.

"The main thing is nobody was in that garage when it came down," said homeowner Dave Niemi. "I tinker in the garage sometimes and I don't think I would have stood a chance."

The homeowners believe straight-line winds uprooted the tree. The couple says the fire department told them the home is structurally sound. They plan on staying here while the home is repaired.

Luckily their two small dogs were uninjured and rescued by firefighters.

That brief storm created a huge mess. The couple said this will be their first insurance claim in 37 years.

"It's just something that you see happen to other houses. Does it happen to your house? Never," said Niemi.

Contractors are working on cutting the tree into smaller pieces before it can be removed.
