Driver hurt when car hits horse in Elk Township

71-year-old driver hospitalized after crash Wednesday night on east Peck Road

ELK TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 71-year-old man is recovering after being hurt Wednesday evening when his car hit a horse that was standing in the road in Sanilac County's Elk Township.

In a statement, the sheriff's office said Gerald Knapp, of Croswell, was on east Peck Road when he hit the horse.

Knapp's Dodge Avenger then veered into the opposite lanes and hit another driver, Peck resident Jamie Wells.

Knapp was taken to McKenzie Hospital. The sheriff's office didn't give his condition.

Wells was not hurt.

The horse's owners said they had just purchased the horse and three others that day, and that the horses had got out of the pen, according to the sheriff's office.
