DETROIT – Detroit-area nonprofits are getting nearly $500,000 in grants that are being handed out during surprise visits.

Bank of America's Detroit Day of Giving takes place Thursday. It seeks to recognize nonprofits for work improving access to basic needs such as food and shelter.

Teams of bank executives are visiting 13 nonprofits throughout the day. Several other nonprofits will get funding as part of the bank's Neighborhood Builders program. In all, Bank of America says nearly $1 million will be distributed to nonprofits during the day.

The Day of Giving is part of the bank's broader philanthropic efforts in the Detroit area and around the U.S.
