Michigan State Police trooper injured in accident in Detroit

DETROIT – A Michigan State Police Trooper was treated for injuries after he was involved in a car accident on Detroit's west side.

The accident happened at the intersection of Fenkell and St. Mary's streets around 2:50 a.m. Wednesday.

Michigan State Police said the trooper involved in accident was on his way to assist another trooper on a traffic stop when a SUV ran a flashing red light, hitting the police cruiser.

Both the trooper and the driver of the SUV were transported to the hospital and have since been released. The at-fault driver is now in custody.

State Police suspect narcotics may have been a factor as to why the driver ran the flashing red light.
