Detroit police partner with app to create safer neighborhoods
Detroit Police Chief James Craig on Tuesday announced a partnership with Nextdoor, the private social network for neighborhoods, to improve citywide and neighbor-to-neighbor communications.
Nextdoor has already proven to be an essential and well-adopted tool for Detroit residents. More than 120 neighborhoods in Detroit, have already started Nextdoor websites.
With Nextdoor, Detroit residents are able to create private neighborhood websites to share information, about neighborhood public safety issues, community events, activities, local services, and even lost pets. With the partnership of the Detroit Police Department, Neighborhood Police Officers will be allowed to access the site and post information pertaining to the city thereby keeping residents informed.
Additionally, the Detroit Police Department and Nextdoor neighborhoods will be able to work together to increase safety and strengthen virtual neighborhood watch. Further, this joint venture will aid in continuing the Detroit Police Department's commitment in building stronger, and safer communities for residents in the city of Detroit.
Nextdoor is free for all residents. Each Detroit neighborhood has its own private Nextdoor neighborhood website, accessible only to residents of that neighborhood. Residents’ websites, contact information, or content will not be accessible to the public. Neighborhoods establish and self-manage their own Nextdoor website. All members must verify that they live within the neighborhood before joining Nextdoor. Information shared on Nextdoor is password protected and cannot be accessed by Google or other search engines.
“Having the ability to communicate with residents is extremely vital to not only maintaining, but also increasing safety and reducing crime within our communities,” said Chief James E. Craig. “Nextdoor, give us another tool to help empower neighbors and build community collaboration.”
