1-year-old dies after mother accidentally runs her over, Oak Park official says

OAK PARK, Mich. – A 1-year-old girl died Thursday after her mother accidentally ran her over in Oak Park.

City Manager Erik Tungate told Local 4 the accident happened in the driveway of a home at the corner of Sussex and Marlow streets.

The mother accidentally reversed and ran over the girl, Tungate said. There were two other siblings in the vehicle at the time. No other injuries were reported.

The vehicle was a SUV -- a Saturn Vue.

"The 1-year-old had actually been run over by her mother in the family vehicle with other siblings in the car," said Lt. Marlon Benson.

Oak Park police officers rushed the girl to a hospital, where a trauma team was waiting for her, but she died.

Police said a team of 40 doctors and nurses at Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital were on staff and ready to work on the girl, but they could not revive her. Her injuries were mainly internal. She may have also suffered a broken leg, police said.

"In 20 years of experience I have never seen this much hospital personnel working their hardest to revive a child," said Lt. Benson.

Oak Park police are investigating. It's considered a tragic accident at this point.
