Dearborn boxer dies after first professional match

DEARBORN, Mich. – A 19-year-old boxer from Dearborn died Tuesday night after his first professional boxing match.

Hamzah Aljahmi suffered head injuries during his Saturday night fight at Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Banquet Center in Youngstown, Ohio.

Aljahmi was knocked down in the first round, but continued fighting. He collapsed seconds before the fourth bell. He slipped into a coma before he reached the hospital.

The fight was with Ohio boxer Anthony Taylor who was devastated after the match and visited Aljahmi and his family in the hospital.

With more than two dozen amateur fights under his belt, Aljahmi felt he was ready to go pro.

It is unclear if a punch in the first round led to Aljahmi’s death. He went on to win the following two rounds.

The medical examiner has not yet ruled on the cause of death.

Aljahmi’s funeral is Thursday.
