Father of 3 shot, killed during carjacking on Christmas Eve

Tolson was heading to mother's home after playing church service

DETROIT – A father of three was shot and killed during a carjacking Christmas Eve on Detroit’s east side.

Anthony Tolson was driving to his mother’s house after performing during services at his church when he was carjacked at the intersection of Gratiot and State Fair avenues around 9:30 p.m. Tolson had turned 33 last week.

“They snatched him out of the car,” Allison Tolson said. “All they had to do was leave him. Take the car. Everything in that car is replaceable. Cars are replaceable.”

Tolson’s children, ages 7, 12 and 13, were staying at his mother’s home where he was expected after the service with Christmas gifts in the vehicle. His mother, Allison Tolson waited all night for his return. She was greeted by Detroit police at 7 a.m. Christmas Day.

“The police knocked on the door at 7 o’clock,” said Allison Tolson. “I didn’t sleep. I’m calling my son’s cellphone. It goes to voicemail. That’s not like him.”

Anthony Tolson had traveled the world as a professional bass player with R&B’s Ne-Yo. They had appeared on "The Tonight Show" and "Saturday Night Live."

In coming weeks, he was going to become an ordained minister at Central Baptist Church in Detroit.

Detroit police have no suspects in custody and Tolson’s gray Chevrolet Trailblazer is still missing.

A candle light vigil is planned for Sunday at 14999 Gratiot Avenue at 5 p.m.
