Slain Detroit firefighter mourned by entire department

Dave Madrigal found dead in his home Monday

DETROIT – A woman who worked with a man found murdered in his home has hopes someone will come forward to talk to police.

Dave Madrigal, a father of two, was found murdered in his home.

Verdine Day and Dave Madrigal were both Detroit fire engine operators. She said she remembers when Madrigal was hired 25 years ago.

His murder stunned not just colleagues at Engine 33 Ladder 13, but the entire fire department.

Verdine said she decided to raise money as a reward in hopes someone will talk to police about the slaying.

The 59-year-old man was found dead Monday inside his home in the 7600 block of Vaughn. He had been dead for at least a day before a relative went to check on him. Officials said Madrigal died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Detroit police said the victim's 2015 Ford Explorer was gone, but has since been recovered.

Personal items were also missing from the home.

As police investigate, firefighters mourn the loss of one of their own.

Madrigal's funeral will be held Monday.

So far, no one has been arrested.
