Detroit rape victim dies from injuries

17-year-old dies after attack at east Detroit home

DETROIT – A 17-year-old victim of a sexual assault in Detroit has died from injuries she suffered during the attack, family members said.

Ge'Naye Washington was attacked Jan. 7 inside a home in the 5300 block of Radnor Street. Police have identified 19-year-old Darian Winfield as a person of interest in her attack.

Meanwhile, Winfield is charged in connection to another sexual assault on the city's east side. He is accused of breaking into a house Dec. 30 in the 5800 block of Radnor Street and stabbing a 39-year-old Detroit woman in the chest with the intent of sexually assaulting her. She was hospitalized.

Police are calling Winfield a possible serial rape suspect. Moreover, Grosse Pointe Park police said Winfield is a suspect in a Dec. 13 attack on a woman in their city. He was arrested last week, arraigned on a sexual assault charge on Sunday and is being held at the Wayne County Jail on a $1 million bond.

"In one incident we know he was armed with what appeared to be a kitchen knife. In the most recent incident (the victim suffered) blunt force trauma. We don't know what weapon may have been used," said Detroit Police James Craig said during a news conference last week.

Washington's family said she was badly beaten during the attack. She had been hospitalized for several days before she died.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help her family with medical and funeral expenses.

Local 4 is waiting to hear back from the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office on what charges could be issued in this case.
