DETROIT – An 18-year-old man who was arrested in connection to the fatal shooting of a 42-year-old Detroit mother is now charged in a separate carjacking.
Rayvon Smith was arraigned Friday on carjacking, armed robbery, assault with intent to murder, receiving and concealing stolen property and carrying a concealed weapon charges.
Prosecutors said he and 17-year-old Ralph Marshall carjacked a 21-year-old man at gunpoint on Jan. 23 in the 14400 block of Edmore Street.
Garner was shot Wednesday in her car as she waited for her son to finish basketball practice.
Smith has not been charged yet in Garner’s death, but police said he was with Marshall at the time of Garner's death. Marshall is charged with murder, carjacking and felony firearms in Garner's death.
Marshall is facing the same charges as Smith for the earlier carjacking.
Marshall's mother said that he is not violent and has never been in trouble before.
“I am sorry for the lady that lost her life,” Marshall’s mother said. “I don’t think my son done this. Our son is not like this.”
