Retired Detroit police officer shoots at 2 attempted home invaders

Shooting happened Tuesday afternoon on West Outer Drive

DETROIT – A retired Detroit police officer opened fire Tuesday afternoon on two men who were trying to break into his home on the city's west side, police said. 

Police said the 70-year-old retired officer saw the man trying to break in and went outside to confront them. He fired a gun approximately three times, hitting both men, police said. 

One of the suspects was shot in the back and arrested at the scene. The second was hit in the stomach area but fled from the scene and is not in custody, police said. 

The officer retired in 2005 after serving in the Detroit Police Department for 37 years.
