14-year-old Kalamazoo shooting survivor to leave hospital

Abbie Kopf was very near death; recuperation is remarkable, docs say

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Abigail Kopf, the 14-year-old whose heart stopped when she was shot in a Cracker Barrel parking lot in Kalamazoo, Michigan, is improving and will leave the hospital for a rehab facility on Tuesday, according to a Go Fund Me page set up by a family friend.

"Abbie is improving every day. Tomorrow she will be sent to a rehab facility," reads a Monday post to the page.

The sharp improvement in condition comes after two intense weeks of hospitalization since she was shot in a shooting spree on February 20.

Dr. Aaron Lane-Davies told CNN affiliate WOOD that Abigail's heart stopped and doctors at the hospital got it beating again. Her family kept her on life support so her organs could be donated.

The first sign of improvement for her mom, Vicki, was when Abigail squeezed her hand, which she described as "breathtaking ... a miracle on its own."

On Sunday, Kopf's parents shared that "She is laughing and joking. She laughed at bits of Harry Potter and even made political jokes with us," according to the Go Fund Me page.

Other improvements and signs of Abigail's "spitfire" personality have been documented on the fundraising site.

"She smiled and stuck her tongue out at the doctor today," one message read. "She still has a sense of humor and playfulness."

"There's no keeping this girl down!! She is able to walk with some assistance now and at one point even stroked a nurse's ponytail," another post says.

Authorities said Kopf was shot by Jason Brian Dalton during a five-hour shooting spree February 20 in between picking up fares as an Uber driver.

Six people were killed as Dalton fired from his car. Authorities said that he switched vehicles in the middle of the attack and continued to shoot victims.

Dalton, 45, is charged with six counts of murder. Police have said he does not have a history of mental health issues.

Prosecutors said last week that Dalton will undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he is competent to stand trial.
