Eastbound I-94 is back open at I-696 after police investigation

Section of interstate closed for hours Friday

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. – Eastbound I-94 is back open to traffic at I-696 after a police investigation had shut it down for hours Friday afternoon.

Michigan State Police said troopers were dispatched about 12:30 p.m. for a traffic accident near I-94 and 11 Mile Road in St. Clair Shores. A driver initially told troopers a piece of road debris went through the windshield of his Jeep, injuring the passenger.

However, state police say the driver's story did not match up with evidence found at the scene. Moreover, the driver told troopers he and the passenger had just purchased heroin in Detroit, state police said.

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital. He underwent surgery and is listed in critical condition. State police said he may be brain dead.

State police are investigating to find out what exactly happened.

Meanwhile, the interstate is open to traffic.
