Suspected drunk driver hits Detroit police officer

DETROIT – A Detroit police officer from the 6th Precinct is recovering from minor injuries after he was hit by a suspected drunk driver early Friday morning. 

Department spokesman Sgt. Michael Woody said the officer was one of two patrol units who were responding at about 4 a.m. to a call on Joy Road neary Asbury Park with their lights and sirens on when a driver in a Mercury sedan attempted to make a U-turn and hit the officer's patrol car. 

Woody said the officer is a supervisor in his 40s who was taken to a hospital with neck and back pain. 

Woody said the driver was taken into custody on suspicion of drunk driving. He also said the driver has several traffic warrants on his record.
