Troy police: Suspect in mother's slaying is her neighbor

37-year-old found dead Monday in Somerset apartments

TROY, Mich. – A 53-year-old man has been charged in connection to the slaying of a Troy mother who was found dead in her apartment on Monday.

Police said Charles Anthony Stephens lived in the same building as the victim. He was arraigned Wednesday on a felony murder charge. He was denied bond and is being held at the Oakland County Jail.

The woman, whose name has not yet been released, was found in the Somerset apartment complex on Golfview Street after police officers went to check on her. Police said her family became concerned when she didn't pick up her two elementary-aged children from a bus stop.

The Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the death a homicide.

Police said they've had "multiple previous" contacts with the suspect, and he was arrested Tuesday night. Police said they believe robbery was a possible motive because there were items missing from the home.
