Dearborn considers banning smoking in parks

DEARBORN, Mich. – An ordinance amendment would prohibit smoking within 15 feet of the outer most edge of any play structure in a Dearborn neighborhood park.

Moreover, smoking would be completely banned in mini-parks.

Smoking is defined as a cigarette, e-cigarette, cigar, a pipe that contains tobacco or any other product which is lighted or burning.

The recommendation likely will be discussed and possibly voted on for a final reading at the Dearborn City Council's business meeting on April 12.

The city of Ann Arbor also has similar smoking restrictions in place at its parks. Overall, more than 1,200 park systems across the country have a smoking ban.Â
