3 ejected, killed in crash on I-94; 1 injured

DETROIT – Three people were killed Saturday morning after they were ejected from a vehicle during a crash on I-94 on Detroit’s east side.

The accident happened just after 1 a.m. on I-94 near Helen Street.

A preliminary investigation showed that the driver of a maroon 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer was travelling eastbound at a high rate of speed and lost control, went up the embankment and struck a light pole. The SUV rolled several times back onto the freeway and ejected the driver, front passenger and one rear passenger.

The remaining rear passenger had to be removed from the car by Detroit firefighters and is in critical condition.

Two of the people ejected were pronounced dead at the scene. The third later died at the hospital.

It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were involved.

Eastbound I-94 was closed at Mt. Elliott Street for several hours.

Michigan State Police are investigation.
