Michigan man in coma after being hit by car in Portland

A 26-year-old metro Detroit man was visiting Portland, Oregon, for his sister’s wedding, but was hit by a car and has been in a coma ever since.

Kyle McGrath, of Royal Oak, was getting out of a car and heading to his sister’s apartment on February 23 when he was hit by a car while crossing the street.

“My dad turned around and he saw my brother fall off the hood of the car and hit his head,” Brandt McGrath said.

A nearby doctor ran to help and firefighters were called to the scene. Kyle has been in a coma for the last five weeks.

His sister’s wedding took place in the hospital by his bedside.

The McGrath family has been going to and from Portland, but they want to bring him home for care. Moving him is a massive undertaking and insurance is running out.

“It’s not a normal commercial airline,” Brandt McGrath said. “They have to put him on a Leer jet with a nursing staff on board and support equipment in case anything goes wrong.”

The family started a GoFundMe to bring Kyle home.
