Woman whose baby died in garage: 'I made a mistake'

Angela Alexie convicted of murder in son's death

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – An Eastpointe woman whose newborn baby was found by recycling workers after she left it to die in a cold garage was sentenced to life in prison without parole on Tuesday.

A jury last month convicted 25-year-old Angela Alexie of murder.

Police said Alexie gave birth to the boy in a garage shortly before Christmas in 2014. A medical examiner testified during Alexie's trial that the boy froze to death.

His body was discovered at a recycling center on Jan. 14, 2015, when it came bundled in cloth down a sorting line.

"I made a mistake. I wish I could take it back," Alexie said at her sentencing.

The death struck a chord with the community. A public viewing was held for him and he was given the name Henry Alexander.

“This case disgusts me. This woman had all kinds of options,” Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith. “We know there are thousands of parents out there waiting to adopt young children.”
