Cameras capture break-in at Detroit pharmacy

Thieves steal bins of prescriptions from Health Mart Pharmacy on 7 Mile Road

DETROIT – Surveillance cameras captured two people using a crowbar to break into a Detroit pharmacy early Wednesday morning and ransacking its shelves.

“It’s a disaster, absolute disaster," said the owner of Health Mart Pharmacy on West 7 Mile Road. He asked to remain anonymous for his safety.

“This is break-in No. 2," he said. "We’ve been open less than a year now. They’re trying everything to get in here. It’s frustrating."

The two thieves, who wore hooded sweatshirts pulled up over their heads, used a car to ram the back, the side and the front of the building. They broke the glass on the front door and got in with crowbars.

“It seemed a little bit planned, like they knew where to go. They knew what to look for," the pharmacy owner said.

The surveillance video shows the thieves grabbing armfuls of bottles and putting them into bins. The pharmacy owner said he mostly stocks medication for high cholesterol and blood pressure.

“We don’t have anything in the store that they can potentially get a high off of. No narcotics, none of that. We do not stock it here for this very reason. But they’re (not valuable) to them, very valuable to us," he said.

The pharmacy has a steel frame door that came with the building, which used to be a bank. It was damaged in the break-in and could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix.

Anyone with information on the break-in or who recognizes the thieves in the video is asked to call Detroit police.
