Police: Woman who crashed into semi-truck on I-75 might have been on cellphone

DETROIT – A 67-year-old woman who crashed into the back of a semi-truck on Interstate 75 in Detroit on Thursday evening might have been distracted by her cellphone, Michigan State Police said.

Police said the semi-truck was stopped in the right northbound lane near Clark Street waiting to get onto the Ambassador Bridge when the woman's Chevy Impala hit its tailer, becoming wedged underneath it.

The woman had to be cut out of the car. She was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital, but died.

Her name has not yet been released.

"Based on information obtained during the initial investigation, it appears she may have been distracted by her cellphone," police said in a statement about the crash.

A similar fatal crash happened in January 2015 at the same location.
