Men steal $4,000 from elderly Waterford woman in driveway sealing scam

Men drove victim to credit union to withdraw cash, police say

WATERFORD, Mich. – Waterford police are looking for two men they say scammed an elderly woman out of half her life savings.

The 86-year-old victim was approached May 26 at her home on Draper Street by two men who said they would seal her driveway for $58, police said.

The victim told police she felt intimidated by the men, but agreed to pay them the money to get them to leave. The men then told the victim they had used 78 gallons of sealant and she owed them $4,000, police said.

The men drove the victim to her credit union to get the cash, police said.

The woman was not harmed, but told police she lost half of her life savings.

Police have released surveillance video and photos of the men with the victim.

Anyone with information on the men in the video -- or who might have been victims of the scam -- can call Waterford police at 248-674-COPS, or Crime Stoppers at 800-SPEAK-UP.
