Woman's cremated remains found on East Side

Remains identified as Senidra Spearman, who died in 2012

DETROIT – Evelyn Stokes was on a walk to her neighborhood store to pick up a candy bar when she saw a box in the middle of Harper Avenue near Lakepointe on Detroit’s east side.

She said she thought it might be an auto part from a nearby store, but then she looked closer.

“I would never have imagined finding something like this,” Stokes said.

Inside the box were the cremated remains of Senidra Spearman, a woman who died in 2012.

Stokes said she wasn’t about to leave someone’s loved one in the middle of the street.

I picked it up (and) I brought it home," she said. "I couldn't leave it there. I'm trying to find the family of Ms. Spearman to get her remains back."

She brought the box home and called Local 4 News in hopes that someone will see this story and claim their loved one.

Spearman's family contacted Local 4 Tuesday night and said they have no idea why her ashes ended up where they were found.
