Man fatally shoots neighbor during argument on Detroit's west side

48-year-old man killed in argument over fence, neighbor says

Detroit police said an argument between two neighbors on Detroit's west side escalated Sunday, leaving one of the men dead.

The shooting happened around 1:30 p.m. in the 14000 block of Rockdale.

Police said a 28-year-old man and his 48-year-old neighbor were arguing when the 28-year-old shot the older man.

Authorities said the 48-year-old man was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Doug Kaufman said he tried desperately to save his neighbor's life.

Kaufman was in his basement when he heard the barrage of gunfire. When he ran outside, he saw his neighbor lying in the middle of the street. Within minutes, the 48-year-old was dead.

Kaufman said his neighbors had been fighting for years over a fence. He said the victim wanted his neighbor to repair the fence in the backyard.

The 28-year-old was arrested and the weapon used in the shooting was recovered, police said.
