10-month-old dies after being run over by mother on Detroit's west side

Incident happened at home on Westmoreland Road

DETROIT – A 10-month-old girl died after being accidentally run over by her mother outside a home on Detroit's west side, police said.

The incident happened in the 19500 block of Westmoreland Road.

The infant was in the backyard playing with other children and the child's father when she wandered away and walked in front of the front tire of the vehicle.

"There were a few other children in the backyard. The father of the 10-month-old was playing with them and unfortunately the 10-month-old, who had just started walking, had wandered off,” Detroit Police Capt. Mark Thorton said.

The little girl didn't go very far -- just a couple of steps onto the driveway. A witness saw the child and started to yell out, but the mother had no idea what the yelling was about and moved her SUV forward, crushing her child.

The child was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
