Friends chased, beaten, robbed in Ypsilanti Township

YPSILANTI TWP – One of the victims in an Ypsilanti Township robbery said a large group of people kicked and punched him before stealing his phone and cash.

The robbery happened at around 2 a.m. Tuesday on Levona and Service Drive Tuesday.

The two victims saw a large group of people walking toward them as they were headed to the In and Out liquor store on Service Drive, but when they turned a corner to try to avoid the group, they got ambushed, according to the victim.

"It was, like, 14 of them. It was crazy. We just got up and ran like it wasn't for real," said the victim who didn't want to be identified.

He said someone in the group pulled out a handgun.

"They pulled out the gun out of their back pocket, and said 'get on the ground.' They slapped my friend and kept hitting me with the gun on the head," said the victim.

The group of people got away with a cellphone and $20.

"They didn't have to use as much force. It's kind of messed up what they did and it was over $20 and a phone," the victim said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department.
