Garden City woman testifies against man accused in multiple sexual assaults

Woman says Ikeie Smith assaulted her in her home

GARDEN CITY, Mich. – A woman bravely took the stand Thursday to testify in the case against a suspected serial rapist.

Ikeie Smith is accused of rape and sexual assault in several areas around Metro Detroit, including Allen Park, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Inkster and Redford Township.

He's appeared in court before, but stood for the first time while one of the victims described what happened to her.

The focus in court Thursday was on an attack in Garden City. The woman victimized in that attack had the courage to tell a room full of strangers about the horrible things that happened to her.

"He had a knife out

The woman believes Smith got in her home through an open kitchen window. She said he sexually assaulted and raped her.

"He is touching me

The woman's testimony is just the beginning for Smith, who is accused of assaults dating back to 2011. He was caught when someone recognized him in surveillance video from Lincoln Park.

DNA tests tied him to other cases, in which more women could give testimony like Thursday's. Police said they have looked at him in connection with around 32 cases.

The hearing was a preliminary exam to determine if there's enough evidence against Smith to proceed with the case. The judge determined there was enough evidence, so the case will now move to the circuit court.
