Detroit man charged after allegedly kidnapping 3-year-old boy, prompting Amber Alert

Michael Lee Grayson charged with kidnapping

DETROIT – A 19-year-old Detroit man was charged Friday in connection with the kidnapping of 3-year-old Marvie Gardner, which prompted an Amber Alert Thursday morning.

Michael Lee Grayson is charged with one count of kidnapping -- child enticement and one count of unlawful driving away of an automobile. He is being held on $750,000 bail.

Police said Grayson kidnapped a 3-year-old boy from a home in the 19300 block of Winston Street in Detroit. An Amber Alert was issued and Detroit police officers found the child unharmed in a car parked outside an abandoned house in the 19300 block of Biltmore Street.

The Amber Alert was issued around 10 a.m. Marvie's mother, Latoya Spears, said she woke up around 5:30 a.m. and noticed her son was missing. She told police she had friends over Wednesday night, including Grayson and his wife.

Spears told police that after she went to bed, Grayson and his wife got into an argument and Grayson's wife left the home with their son. In retaliation, Grayson allegedly took Marvie for ransom.

The boy's mother found a note from the suspected kidnapper. The note reads:

"Get my baby!! Will Contact. Done Play'n Let's Play"

Police said Grayson kidnapped the boy in a purple Plymouth Voyager that was stolen from a neighbor's house. The Voyager was later found on Detroit's west side.
