Students conduct experiment at Somerset mall, learn someone will walk away with their wallet

Man walked away with $70, credit cards after students try to film his reaction

TROY, Mich – Two students got some tough results to a social experiment at Somerset Collection mall on Oct. 30.

They wanted to see what happens when they dropped at wallet at the mall, and they learned not everyone is a willing participant.

The experiment involved one person dropping the wallet, which happened to have their ID, credit cards and $70 of their money, and the other recording the reaction of unsuspecting subjects.

One subject turned into a suspect when they picked up the wallet and kept walking. The students tried to follow the man, but lost sight of him -- and the wallet.

They then reported the wallet stolen to police. The experiment's thief is described as a white male, about 35 years old 5-foot-10, 180 pounds.
