Donation helps Southfield police buy bulletproof vests for dogs

Bran Ede donates $2,500 for 4 K-9 vests

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Four police dogs in Southfield have some pretty expensive new gear -- they've been given bulletproof vests.

Jeff Medici is a master trainer. His partner is 7-year-old Chase, and like any human officer, Chase needs protection. But there isn't always money in the budget to buy vests for police dogs.

Michigan Insurance and Financial Services donated $2,500 for the four custom-fit vests, which will help protect Ivo, Harley, Chase and Rodger.

Southfield police Chief Eric Hawkins said it's vital to have this kind of community support for his department.

Bran Ede, who donated the money for the vests, said it was an honor to be able to give back.

If you want to help like Ede did, Hawkins said you can contact your local police department to learn about donating to the K-9 unit.
