Detroit man to be sentenced for hate crime video posted to Twitter

DETROIT – A 20-year-old Detroit man accused of pulling a gun on another man while yelling homophobic slurs, all while recording the incident with his cellphone, will be sentenced for the crime on Wednesday. 

The video sparked outraged as it circulated Twitter. It showed a man pointing a gun at another man outside the Bightmoor Liquor store on Detroit’s west side.

Steven Edwards was charged with felonious assault, carrying a concealed weapon in a motor vehicle and a felony firearms violation. He pleaded guilty before his scheduled trial date. He could face up to four years for felonious assault. 

Judge Lawrence Talon is scheduled to sentence Edwards Wednesday morning.
