Detroit parents sentenced in death of 11-month-old baby

Parents face 2 to 15 years after father falls asleep on top of child

DETROIT – The parents of an 11-month-old baby who died after his father fell asleep on top of him were sentenced Tuesday morning.

Lorenzo Brooks, 30, and Leticia Molton, 38, both pleaded guilty to homicide and involuntary manslaughter in the death of Lorenzo Brooks Jr.

Brooks and Molton will spend two to 15 years in prison. They each will receive 145 days credit for time already served.

According to police, Molton woke up and found her son unresponsive on Sept. 15, 2016. Brooks took the baby to the hospital.

“I just want to say sorry to my son,” Brooks said during sentencing. “He didn’t get a chance to grow up and be a kid and enjoy life.”

“He loved that baby,” Brooks’ sister, Yolanda Exum, said. “He’s a good dad.”

Education and safe sleeping practices were reiterated by the judge, prosecutors and the defendants’ attorneys.

“This case just really does highlight the importance of education and knowing the proper ways to take care of your child,” said Judge Margaret Van Houten, noting that a child being placed between people on a bed is not appropriate.

“It’s an awful way to learn this lesson,” Van Houten said.

Brooks and Molten had another child that died in 2014. Their 6-month-old daughter’s death was ruled sudden infant death syndrome.
