Allen Park teen arrested with beer bottle in hand after crashing into tree during police chase

James Santiago told police he didn't stop because he was drunk

ALLEN PARK, Mich. – A 19-year-old Allen Park man was arrested Feb. 25 after allegedly leading police on a chase while drinking a bottle of beer.

James Acosta Santiago was driving a 2007 Dodge Magnum on Southfield Road when police said he turned south onto Roosevelt Avenue without stopping for the red light.

A police officer activated his overhead emergency lights and tried to stop the Magnum, but Santiago allegedly kept driving. Police said he turned onto Ecorse Road and drove through another traffic signal, turned onto Berkshire and Luana, and blew through the stop sign at Ecorse and Luana.

When Santiago tried to turn east onto Philomene Boulevard, police said he was going too fast and crashed into a tree in front of a home.

Santiago allegedly got out of the car with an open bottle of beer in his hand.

The officer who arrested Santiago said the teen told him he didn't stop because he was drunk. The officer said he found a half-empty can of beer between the front seats and unopened beers in the car.

Santiago allegedly had a blood-alcohol content of 0.18 and 0.19 on two breath tests, which is more than twice the legal BAC limit for a driver.

Santiago is charged with fleeing and eluding police, driving with a high BAC and having an open container.
