West Detroit family still waiting for power to return after massive outage

Family on Detroit's west side among last to get power restored

DETROIT – A family of five living on Detroit's west side is among the last to get their power restored after the wind storm Wednesday.

The Hoepner family has been without power since Wednesday morning and is trying to find ways to stay warm.

"I got my grandparents. I'm trying to keep them warm and we're running out of money for the gas for the generator and it's been bad," Eric Hoepner said.

The family hasn't been able to sleep much and recently got a generator from its aunt, but the generator has been going in and out.

"It's frustrating. It's cold and it's not fun sleeping on the floor," Candy Hoepner said.

The family has been calling DTE but is losing patience and money.

"We even took our cable money that we're supposed to pay our cable with, and with buying food and gas to keep us going, we don't even know what we're going to do. Even if we do get power back on, (we) won't be able to pay for that now," Eric Hoepner said.

As of 5:30 p.m., the Hoepners remained without power, but DTE is hoping to have all power restored by 11:30 p.m. Monday.
