Auburn Hills driver hospitalized after crashing through fence into building

Speed, alcohol considered factors in crash, police say

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – A 30-year-old Auburn Hills resident was taken to the hospital Thursday after driving through a fence and crashing into a building.

Police said they found the vehicle inside a building on University Drive, but the driver had left the scene. There was a substantial amount of blood in the car.

Police smelled natural gas coming from the building, so they evacuated people there and in the neighboring building until Consumers Energy and the Auburn Hills Department of Public Works turned off the gas.

Officers learned that the car is registered to a resident of Richwood Street just north of the building. They went to the home and they found a significant amount of blood outside. When officers got inside the home, it was empty.

Police said the resident was later found, with the help of the Oakland County Sheriff's Department, and taken to the hospital.

The driver suffered upper body injuries in the crash.

Alcohol and speed are considered factors in the crash, police said.
