10-year-old boy accidentally shoots brother, police say

DETROIT – A Detroit father is in custody Tuesday after police said his 10-year-old son shot his 14-year-old brother while they were playing with a shotgun.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. Monday at the family's home on Pfent Street.

The 14-year-old boy was accidentally shot in the stomach while the boys were playing with their father's shotgun, police said. The teen was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Now the father is in police custody awaiting charges.

The 10-year-old had found his father's shotgun. The boys were playing with the gun when it discharged. The older brother was struck in the stomach.

The street was blocked off for hours as Detroit child abuse services investigates. Evidence technicians took photos in an upstairs room and removed the gun.

Police led the 10-year-old boy and his father into the back of a squad car. Police said the younger boy was not arrested in connection with the shooting.

Police said the father was not home at the time of the shooting, Two grandparents were at the home when it happened, but it's not clear where they were when the shot was fired.
