Detroit mother charged with killing newborn daughter arraigned

DETROIT – A Detroit mother charged with first-degree murder after her newborn daughter was found in a garbage can was arraigned Saturday.

According to court documents, 39-year-old Glencetta Gloster-Washington was charged with first-degree murder in the newborn's death.

Police said Gloster-Washington allegedly gave birth to the baby girl Saturday at her home in the 3500 block of Yorkshire in Detroit. Family members of Gloster-Washington discovered her bleeding and took her to a hospital for treatment.

Hospital staff determined that the woman had recently given birth, but did not have a baby with her.

Police went to Gloster-Washington's home where they discovered the remains of the newborn in a garbage can.
Gloster-Washington’s attorney told the judge that his client has no criminal history, is a mother to five other children and has been an employee of the U.S. Postal Service for 14 years.

The judge presiding over Gloster-Washington’s case set her bail at  $500,000.
