Natural gas leak in Grosse Pointe Woods forces evacuations near Mack Avenue

GROSSE POINTE WOODS, Mich. – A natural gas leak forced multiple homes and businesses to be evacuated Thursday morning in Grosse Pointe Woods.

The evacuations were ordered at homes off of Mack Avenue in the area of Manchester Boulevard. Mack Avenue is closed, as are many streets off of Mack Avenue, between Manchester and Stanhope. Allard Road is closed between Mack Avenue and Bramcaster, and that's expected to remain closed for the next 4-5 hours, Grosse Pointe Woods police said.

Authorities said gas mains were being replaced and it is believed that crews struck a line.

No injuries have been reported.

DTE Energy said the call was made to them just after 10 a.m. Thursday. DTE crews are on scene. The utility company said there is a leak from a 60-pound line.

Authorities asked that the public avoid the area. Grosse Pointe Woods police said residents and people who were at nearby businesses will not be allowed to return to their homes and businesses until DTE declares the area safe.
