DETROIT – A man was killed Tuesday morning when a man accused of shooting at a relative ran a red light at Schaefer Highway and the I-96 Service Drive and hit his vehicle, police said.
According to police, the 34-year-old man who ran the light fired shots at a home in the 14000 block Northlawn Street, about a mile and a half from the crash scene.
Officers went to the home, and there was a short pursuit, but police lost the driver.
Another group of officers spotted the man and followed him with their lights off. The man ran a red light at Schaefer Highway and I-96, hitting another vehicle and killing the driver, police said.
Marcus Preston, who works at a nearby gas station, said the man was driving so fast that he should have been on a racetrack.
“You knew somebody was in that car,” said Preston. “You instantly start crying.”
Police said that because their lights were off, they aren’t sure if the man knew he was being followed or why he decided to run the light.
The man was taken into custody. The crash remains under investigation.
