Animal shelter donation box stolen in Woodhaven

WOODHAVEN, Mich. – The darling paw printed donation box has had a place of prominence on the counter near the register at Wild Coney Island on West Road since it opened four years ago.

A volunteer from the Woodhaven Trenton Animal Shelter comes by bi-monthly to empty it.

That's when staff realized it had been stolen. Manager Ali Harajli went through hours of surveillance video footage and there it was.

The thief can be seen wiping the shelter's donation box on surveillance video taken from inside the shelter.

The funds raised much needed financial help. The money goes toward food and medicine for the homeless animals in the shelter.

Harajli tells Local 4 that the man seen taking the donation box looks vaguely familiar, but he isn't a regular customer and he hopes he never sees him again. "It's a whole other level of low," he told us.

The restaurant is going to do a fundraiser for the shelter on May 17. If you come by between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. a portion of the proceeds will go to the shelter.

If you recognize the thief, contact Woodhaven police.
