Man armed with gun prompts lockdown at Orlando International Airport

Man had fake gun, police say

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando International Airport was on lockdown for two hours Tuesday night after a standoff with a gunman.

The man was spotted with a gun near the car rental center, and witnesses said he pointed it in the direction of officers when they arrived.

While no shots were fired, the man refused to drop the weapon, prompting police to order those inside to leave and eventually stop all traffic from coming into the airport.

During the 45 minutes that portions of the airport were locked down, the man did surrender. There were no injuries.

Police confirmed after the incident that the gun was fake.

The man is a former member of the military, police said, and will undergo mental evaluations.

Charges of aggravated assault with a firearm are pending against him.
