Update: Thank you to everyone who has responded, so far. We appreciate the time and thought put into the answers. They're very helpful in directing our efforts.
We regularly hear from parents struggling to get mental health services for their children. Stories of people waiting for beds in psychiatric hospitals, getting turned away medical professionals and often seeing no way forward to help a child in need.
Here's an example of a plea for help we received in the last month:
I am not sure who to send this to or if it is something you would cover. I have a seven year old with severe mental illness who needs stabilization, but no one is willing to help him. We have been through cmh, common ground, day treatment, and currently in the ER for 4 days. Hospitals keep saying he's too young to get help. ... He can't go to school and can't be home because he is a threat to himself and others.
We need your help to document and investigate a system at least some say isn't working. Share your experience using our form below and we'll use all stories to deepen our understanding of the issues surrounding mental health services for children in Michigan.
