3-year-old boy shoots himself with gun dropped on ground

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A person of interest has been taken into custody after a 3-year-old boy fatally shot himself with a gun that was dropped on the ground in Clinton Township.

Police said a man who goes by the street name "Bop" was taken into custody at a gas station on Detroit's west side. He is 29 years old and a resident of Mount Clemens.

"Bop" and three others who were found in the white Chevy Cobalt with him were detained by authorities, police said. Detroit police and FBI agents were both at the scene.

A task force of up to 20 officers were on the hunt for the man, who police believe dropped the gun.

The boy fatally shot himself Tuesday afternoon after police said he found a gun that had been dropped on the ground.

The shooting happened around 1 p.m. at the Newport Arms apartment complex on Lotus Street.

Police said the child was playing with a group of children with his mother nearby when his mother heard a shot and noticed the child had fallen down. Investigators said the child had found a handgun on the ground and accidentally fired it, striking himself.

The family took the toddler to McLaren Maomb Hospital. Police said the child died at the hospital.

Police said a man visiting the apartment complex might have dropped the handgun.

Authorities are looking for the man and the gun.
