Man caught on video stealing from car in Detroit

Video shows methods used by car robbers

DETROIT – The Local 4 Defenders obtained video that offers a rare look at just how good thieves have become at breaking into cars.

One man was caught on video June 30 during a car robbery on McNichols Road. Video showed exactly how he operated.

He pulled into the lot just after 6 p.m. and backed into the parking spot right next to the car he was targeting.

He got out of his car, looked into the nearby car, saw what he wanted and got to work. Video shows him grabbing something he used to pick the lock, but he failed to get in through the door.

Next, he went to the rear door on the driver's side and got in by breaking the window, grabbed a suitcase out of the car and sped off in his black Dodge Charger.

The suitcase was apparently filled with sensitive documents.

Police are still searching for the man in the video. Anyone who recognizes him is asked to call Detroit police at 313-596-2200.
