38-year-old woman sexually assaulted while walking to gas station on Detroit's east side

DETROIT – A 38-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in an alley behind a gas station on Detroit's east side early Wednesday.

Police said the attack happened at about 5 a.m. behind a Citgo gas station at 7 Mile Road and Van Dyke.

The woman was walking to the gas station when a man approached her from behind, grabbed her and forced her into the alley.

Evidence technicians found a used condom at the scene, but they don't know yet if it was related to the assault.

Shanta Harris is behind the gas station often for her bus stop, and the attack has her concerned.

"It's horrible. You can't even walk to the gas station without someone snatching you up, raping you, killing you. It's crazy," Harris said.

Police said the assault isn't part of a pattern, and it hasn't happened in this area before.

The man fled the area after the assault, and the victim was taken to Henry Ford Hospital for treatment and for more evidence collection.

No description of the man was provided.
