BROWN CITY, Mich. – Two crocodiles and a bear escaped Wednesday morning from their cages at a Sanilac County animal sanctuary.

The owners of Summer Wind Farms Sanctuary were able to capture the crocodiles, but assistance was needed to catch a 1-year-old Syrian brown bear. The owners told sheriff’s deputies they believe the cages were intentionally opened.

The Department of Natural Resources, Brown City Fire Department, Elk Township Fire Department, Speaker Township Fire Department, Sanilac County Search and Rescue, Brown City Police Department and Sanilac County Aero Unit were called as a precaution to help locate the bear and alert residents in the area that the bear was out.

The bear was found still on the sanctuary property and was tranquilized and returned to his cage, authorities said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s department at 810-648-2000.
